The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of his move to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
