The star has donated the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which works to preserve the Britain's independent music venues.

He was awarded the prize on mid-October as his third album his work was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role small stages fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was just getting going," remarked the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by including a modest fee to their admission fees, which supports independent venues.

Fender also took part, collecting more than £100,000 on his recent tour to assist thirty-eight small stages across the UK.

These funds assisted spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties stemming from floods, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Other venues received financial assistance in improving facilities and technical equipment that helped performers and audiences.

"The idea that money from shows in large arenas backs the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has commented.

"I also contributed a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked updated gear," she shared with outlets.

Previously, they gave their funds to the youth organization that developed their group, alongside other independent music bodies.

Also 1994 winners they contributed their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was diagnosed the disease.

"The victory was ample," remarked singer Heather Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't need the extra, because we had the honor. So our success touched somebody else's life."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had saved two grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The first in the city and The Croft in that location were bought under the community ownership scheme, which is backed by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "shares" in the properties.
